The History of Hunger Action Month
Established in 2008 by Feeding America—the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization—National Hunger Action Month was created to raise awareness about the millions of Americans facing food insecurity every day.
What began as a call to action for regional food banks has grown into a nationwide movement every September, urging individuals, businesses, and local pantries to advocate, educate, and take direct action in their hometowns.
The SPO Story in Shippensburg
Shippensburg Produce and Outreach was founded on a simple principle: access to fresh, healthy food is essential for community well-being. While traditional food pantries rely heavily on shelf-stable boxed goods, SPO focuses on fresh produce, milk, eggs, and nutrient-dense foods.
Operating every Tuesday out of 130 South Penn Street, SPO works directly with regional food distribution partners and local growers to deliver wholesome groceries directly to qualifying area residents.
